Job Number 180036, Stretch Case

See anything odd about this dial? It's hard to tell here but the dial, seen here flipped over, is a little larger than the movement.
With the dial on the movement, the difference is more obvious.

This is an Elgin grade 295, 6 size, 15 jewels, made about 1917. The dial has feet, the pins that stuck into the movement, for a 6 size.
But the dial is a 12 size.
Note the extra long stem in the case.
This is what we call a "stretch case". The case is about the size that a 12 size watch would be in. The dial and hands are 12 size, the dial being modified (by the factory).

The movement is a smaller 6 size. The result is a larger watch with a much thinner profile.

Now to test the rate for a few days...
