This Waltham has a friction-fit staff. The hub is part of the balance wheel and so is not to be cut off in the lathe. The old staff of pushed out, and the new one pushed in using a staking set.

Here are the Waltham winding/setting parts. This design is common to many Walthams in all sizes.
Also common on most Walthams is their "shipper", also part of the keyless works design.
This is a Waltham 12 size, 15 jewel, grade 220, 1894 model, made about 1915.
