This project is is a grade 63, 18 size, 11 jewels, made about 1874. It is a G. M. Wheeler model. This grade is also found in a 13 jewel version, having the center pivots jeweled.

The design is "transitional" in that it can wind both by the stem and with a key. The beveled pinion for stem winding is visible here. The key wind arbor is shown below.

This is one of those Elgins with a unique lever setting mechanism that moves a hoop-like gear, with teeth on the inside, against the cannon pinion. It is a clever design, but it was short lived. It can be hard to get these to work. The tension against the cannon pinion is low and tends to slip. This watch worked perfectly however with no trouble.
Here is the lever extended for setting mode. Note how that center ring shifts to engage the cannon pinion (not installed yet in this image).

This movement is a grade 355, 0 size, 15 jewels, made about 1912.
These smaller Elgins are often a bit of trouble, but this one runs quite well.
The case is what's called a "stretch case". The movement is a zero size, but the case is more like a 12 size in diameter. This gives the piece a slim profile since the smaller movement is thinner.
Some "stretch" setups use an oversize dial, but this one preserves the smaller dial.

This movement is a Bunn Special railroad grade example made by the Illinois Watch Company. It's always nice to see one of these in good condition.

The movement wasn't running, but it started ticking when I took the cannon pinion off so I'll just let it run down on its own. Safer that way...
It is 18 size, 21 jewels, made about 1901.
There's quite a bit of extra decorative finish work on this movement, under the dial.

I ended up having to replace the cannon pinion for slipping. It had already been tightened pretty "aggressively", shall we say. The movement has a few miles on it for sure, but overall it's pretty solid and keeps good time.
