Ready for a few days of testing...

Illinois number 2834773 is an A. Lincoln, model 9, 16 size, 21 jewels made about 1915.

The replacement staff for this one arrived, and got switch in. The watch has a two-piece double roller, which always requires extra care to handle, as well as tricky adjustment.
But that done, even though the old staff wasn't completely broken, it's really running significantly better now.

Here's another nice Illinois Watch Company product, the A. Lincoln model.



This one is ticking but the upper pivot of the balance staff is all but worn away causing too much end-shake. The balance wheel touches the pallet bridge in certain orientations. I'll have to replace the staff.

Unfortunately I don't have it on hand so they'll be a delay until the part arrives. Illinois part number 47607, by the way, for a two-part double roller...

This Hamilton was formerly job numbers 190091 and 170078.It's back for a replacement mainspring. The movement is 18 size, 21 jewel, grade 940 made about 1905.

Here we have a classic Hamilton railroad watch, 16 size, 21 jewels, 992b made about 1964.

Some Hamiltons have this little clip over the winding arbor, and some do not even though they have the cutouts. Many believe these parts were in all Hamiltons that called for them, and that they have been lost by watchmakers over the years. Maybe, but I have seen very close to mint movements that were missing this clip. At any rate, the part isn't essential as far as I can tell.
This 992b has an extra gear fixed to the main wheel that positions under the barrel plate. This gear engages the bevel pinion rather than the main wheel directly.

Also note the post that locks the main wheel. With this arrangement no main wheel washer and no left handed screw is needed.




 

Job Number 220054

This movement is a Bunn Special railroad grade example made by the Illinois Watch Company. It's always nice to see one of these in good condition.

The movement wasn't running, but it started ticking when I took the cannon pinion off so I'll just let it run down on its own. Safer that way...
It is 18 size, 21 jewels, made about 1901.
There's quite a bit of extra decorative finish work on this movement, under the dial.

I ended up having to replace the cannon pinion for slipping. It had already been tightened pretty "aggressively", shall we say. The movement has a few miles on it for sure, but overall it's pretty solid and keeps good time.

The owner noted that the lever does not lock in out position when setting, you have to hold it. Many lever mechanisms have a second spring that pushes the lever out for this purpose. This watch does not. I thought I'd try to improve it anyway. It is the tension of the setting action itself that pulls the clutch (and thus the lever) back.

What a can of worms that turned into... 

Nothing is worn or broken on this movement. The only way to alter setting tension is the friction of the cannon pinion. But it turns out there is a *very* narrow range of tightness wherein the clutch will not slip in setting, and the the hands will still turn when running. There's nothing I can do to make it better, and it took too many attempts just to get it working - back to where I started. 

You can only adjust a cannon pinion so many times.


I really should have left well enough alone. I just hope it will be alright now.
If the cannon pinion is loose enough that the setting action does not disengage the lever from setting mode then the cannon pinion slips when the watch is running and the hour and minute hands do not move.

The clutch and the intermediary gear it turns in setting do not fully line up in the vertical. That's just how the movement is designed. It slips there easily, when setting, if the cannon pinion is too tight. 

Job Number 220016

This watch was returned to me. The dial has somehow lifted up causing the setting lever to retract fully under the dial, and popping the second hand off. Fortunately the second hand was not lost.

All I can to is set the dial back in place and snug the screws again. Nothing is broken.
