Elgin serial number 6958332 is an 18 size, 7 jewel, grade 96, made about 1897.

It turned out that my educated guess about where the hairspring stud should be pinned was correct. A lot of time was saved there.

Now it's ready for a few days of testing.

Job Number 260028

The hairspring stud is at a steep angle, but this isn't because the hairspring is twisted. The stud has come loose the brass pin holding has slipped partly out. The hairspring is fine.

I'll have to put in a new pin and tighten up the stid. Unfortunately I will have to take an educated guess at the correct location of a the stud and may have to move it once or twice. The beat and rate will need a lot of adjusting.

I left the pin's length exposed for now, until I know the stud is in the right place. Then I'll cut it off neatly at both ends.

This is running well now. I'm going to run it dial up for a couple of days, without the bezel and crystal in place, in order to test for hand collision.

Job Number 260026

This one came back to me after a few years, suddenly not running at all. Oddly, it had no power on the escape wheel. Without complete disassembly, I found a tiny speck of something hard, possibly an almost invisible chip of glass or clear plastic, or maybe something else. The debris was jammed in the 3rd wheel pinion. It's ticking away fine now.

Job Number 260010

During 24 hour test runs I have been having a very hard time getting consistent results with this one. Back on the bench I figured out the the balance cock does not sit exactly flat and can rock front to back a little, almost imperceptibly, just from handling, causing irregularly excessive end-shake.

It's not one of those where divots have been previously raised under the part either. It looks pristine. I flattened out what looked like irregularities, set it properly, and (carefully) tightened the screw a little extra. We'll see how it goes now.

Elgin serial number 20361371 is a grade 313, 16 size, 15 jewels, made about 1918.
