Elgin Grade 286

This grade 286 was made about 1906.  It has a well worn open-face case, but the deep decorative engraving has survived just fine,

It is a 6 size, 7 jewel movement.

I'm not an appraiser, but I can say that the value varies greatly depending on many details of the watch, and especially the material and condition of the case. With a few exceptions, the value of Elgin watches is not very high, simply because they made so many of them and most models are not terribly rare. A good way to get an idea is to browse on eBay. If you have an account on eBay you can search completed auctions and see real prices people have paid. Prices tend to bid up quite a lot at the last minute so the current price of open auctions is less informative. Most of the watches I work on are important to the owner's family and so their value is subjective however. Whether or not it is worth the repair is something only you can say.

Hand scratches codes inside a watch are watchmakers' marks left by persons that serviced the watch. These codes only had meaning to the person that made them.
