Job Number 250006

This one arrived in a nice, gold hunter case with the front broken off. This is actually pretty common. Hunter cases are quite fragile.

Running, but not perfectly...
This movement had trouble dial up. There's several common causes of that, but this movement did not have any of those issues. I tried other jewels, and polishing the pivot (using a balloon chuck, shown here).

Under extra high magnification it looks like the pivot may be bent. It is so slight that I can't be sure I'm not just seeing a reflection. It *really* looks fine.

But having no other ideas left, I changed the staff out. The movement now regulates excellently. Just strange, I would have sworn there was nothing wrong with that staff. But sometimes it just goes like this.

The case back from the goldsmith, repaired, everything looks good.

This was a rough one.
The movement had slivers of wood inserted in the feet instead of brass pins. Of course the wood has pretty much disintegrated and jammed up the holes in the feet.

That's a "repair" I haven't seen before.
There's rust, but honestly o\it's mostly old oil and dirt.
The guard pin is gone.
As in, completely not there.
The roller pin has been replaced with a steel rod.
Fabricating and finishing a replacement guard pin...

The internal end of the lever was bent in an odd way, fixable though.

Elgin serial number 827968 is a grade 6, 18 size, 7 jewels, made about 1881.
