You can find out about how old an Elgin watch or pocketwatch is from the serial number on the movement. Here is a way to lookup Elgin serial numbers for the year of manufacture, number of jewels and other details:
The information on this resource should not be considered highly reliable. I am still merging together various sources and applying manual corrections in light of watches I have seen. I plan to expand the information presented over time.
Data on Elgin serial numbers that begin with letters is not included at this time.
Enjoy...

15465 is a very early number - good watch!
I have an Elgin watch fx154-009,
is it mens or womens and is it real?
fx154-009 is not an original Elgin serial number. I'm not sure what you mean by "real" though. By the way, the Elgin National Watch Company went out of business completely in 1968.
Hi i have an Elgin pocket watch serial number 161584 if I wanted to sell it how much is it worth in todays market its gold
I'm not an appraiser but I can tell you that the value varies greatly depending on many details of the watch, and especially the material and condition of the case. It could be $20, or could be $500. With a few exceptions, the value of Elgin watches is not very high, simply because they made so many of them and most models are not rare.
Elgin never made pocketwatch cases. In those days, the common practice was that a customer would pick out a movement and a case separately at the shop and the watchmaker or jeweler would assemble them together. Because of that the movement serial says nothing about the case, nor the other way around.
